    In the kitchen

A lasagne or pasta bake usually needs 35 to 45 minutes in the oven, until it bubbles at the edges. Set 40 minutes and check it when the timer goes. It is also a sensible point to check a tray of roasting vegetables.

    Sport and training

Each half of a rugby match lasts 40 minutes, in both union and league. For training, 40 minutes is a good length for a steady run or ride, or a gym session with time to warm up and cool down.

    One episode

Most hour-long TV dramas run about 40 to 45 minutes without the adverts. A timer is a fair way to agree on one episode, with the kids or with yourself.

    How the timer works

    • Press Start and it counts down. Change the hours, minutes or seconds first if you need a different length.
    • It works from your device clock, so it stays right in a background tab, and the time left shows in the tab title.
    • Pick an end sound (chime, bell, beep, gentle or silent). The full screen button puts the timer alone on the screen.
    • Keeps working offline once the page has loaded. No account, nothing to install.

    Frequently asked questions

How long is a half in rugby?

40 minutes, in both rugby union and rugby league.

    Can I pause the timer?

Yes. Pause keeps the time left. Press Resume to carry on.

Can I time two dishes at once?

Open a second tab for the second dish. Each tab runs its own timer.

Will it sound if my laptop goes to sleep?

No. A sleeping computer runs nothing. When it wakes, the timer shows the right time left, but keep the device awake if the sound matters.
