Classroom timer

A big visual timer for the front of the room. Pick a time, press Start, and put it full screen.

    5:00

Made for the front of the room

    • A shrinking disc that younger children can read before they can read a clock.
    • Numbers sized to be read from the back row in full screen.
    • One-tap presets from 1 minute to an hour, or type any time.
    • Name the activity and it shows above the timer: "Silent reading", "Tidy up", "Group task".
    • A choice of end sounds, including a silent option for tests.
    • Stays accurate in a background tab, so you can move to your slides.

    Routines it suits

Transitions and tidy-up (2 to 3 minutes), think-pair-share (1 minute each way), silent reading and independent work (10 to 20 minutes), brain breaks (2 to 5 minutes), and timed sections of an assessment. For carousel or station work where groups move round the room, the station rotation timer runs the whole lesson and tells each group where to go.

    Questions

    Is the classroom timer free?

Yes. There is no account, no signup and no adverts. It runs in the browser on the classroom computer, a smartboard, a Chromebook or a tablet.

Will it keep time if I switch to my slides?

Yes. The timer works from the clock itself, not by counting ticks, so it stays accurate in a background tab and the end sound still plays on time. The time left also shows in the browser tab.

Can it run silently, for a test?

Choose Silent as the end sound. The disc and the numbers still show exactly how long is left, and the screen says Time's up at the end.

How do I show it on the board?

Press the full screen button or the F key. Everything except the timer is hidden, the numbers are sized for the back of the room, and the buttons tuck away while it runs. Move the mouse or tap to bring them back.

Can I add time without stopping it?

Yes. The plus and minus buttons, or the up and down arrow keys, add or take away a minute while it keeps running.

    Why does the colour change?

The disc turns amber for the last stretch (the final minute, or the last fifth of a longer timer) so the class can see time is nearly up without anyone announcing it, and red when it finishes.
