    The long break

In the Pomodoro Technique, every four 25 minute work blocks earn a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes. Fifteen is the usual choice when you still have more to do. Set it, step away from the screen, and go back when it sounds. The Pomodoro timer handles the work blocks.

    Fifteen minute jobs

    • A quick tidy of one room. Stop when it sounds, however far you got.
    • White rice: most long-grain rice simmers for 12 to 15 minutes with the lid on.
    • Reading for 15 minutes a day, which adds up to more than 90 hours a year.
    • A short catch-up call with a hard stop.

A way into jobs you are avoiding

The hardest part of a dull job is starting it. Agreeing to do just 15 minutes makes it easy to begin, and often you carry on after the timer goes.

    How the timer works

    • Press Start and it counts down. Change the hours, minutes or seconds first if you need a different length.
    • It works from your device clock, so it stays right in a background tab, and the time left shows in the tab title.
    • Pick an end sound (chime, bell, beep, gentle or silent). The full screen button puts the timer alone on the screen.
    • Keeps working offline once the page has loaded. No account, nothing to install.
