HIIT Workout Timer: Fitness Guide 2026

Why HIIT Needs Precise Timing in 2026

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is built on work and rest periods of a set length. Guess the timing and the rests creep longer while the work gets shorter. Push the other way and you overdo it. Either way, results suffer.

    Essential HIIT Timer Protocols

    Tabata Protocol (4 minutes)

The classic Tabata format. Count the rounds yourself and use our timer for the intervals:

    • 20 seconds flat out
    • 10 seconds rest
    • Repeat 8 times

    30-30 Intervals (20 minutes)

    A good one for beginners:

    • 30 seconds work
    • 30 seconds rest
    • 20 rounds total

EMOM (Every Minute on the Minute)

Start a set at the top of each minute and rest for whatever time is left. It works well for mixing strength and cardio.

    Setting Up Your Workout Timer

Our smart timer takes typed requests, so you can set the length of a whole session without fiddling with buttons. Type something like:

    • "Set a 4-minute timer" for a Tabata block
    • "Set a 20-minute timer" for 30-30 intervals
    • "Set a 12-minute timer" for a short EMOM

Then count your rounds off the clock as it runs down.

    Recovery and Rest Period Optimization

The rest period matters as much as the work. Use each one to:

    • Let your heart rate come down to around 60-70% of max
    • Get your head ready for the next round
    • Take a small sip of water

    Conclusion

Good HIIT comes down to sticking to the timings. Use our free workout timer to keep every interval honest and get more out of each session.
